6 Pound Muscle Gain in 4 Weeks on a Vegan Diet

Today I met with Tim my personal trainer for our end-of-week session, and we took our second set of weight and body fat measurements (using a counter balance scale, and skin fold calipers). We were both thrilled to discover that in the last month I've gained 6 pounds of muscle, and have dropped 1% of my body fat. All on a 99% vegan* diet!  I think Tim may have been more excited about this, mainly because the gains have happened primarily* without animal proteins.   So how do I do it?  Here's the gist:

Switching Doubt to Power in An Instant

If you've been following me on Twitter or Facebook, you may have noticed that I'm pursuing a lot of physical training styles lately -- belly dance, hip hop, yoga, ballet, contemporary dance, hooping, weight training, parkour, and now breakdancing.

How To Move Through Embarrassment In Dance Classes

There have been several times in the past year or so where I have decided to try out a new dance form; Attending a new class for the first time (or first several times) can be a harrowing experience. There's the not knowing anyone, the "I don't know what the heck is going on here...Everyone else seems to know what they are doing...", and the challenge of trying to get one's body to move in new ways.  For me these feelings always arise as a high degree of self-consciousness.

Check out this great short presentation by Kent Bye at Ingite Portland 7. Thanks to Rich at Isopop for posting.

Movement Play 3

It's happening! Mark your calendar for the last weekend of June, 2009, for the third annual Movement Play summer micro festival.  I am currently writing the long term business plan for Movement Play events, and I am really energized about the future of these gatherings. It feels great to be putting all of my organization on to paper, and allowing it to be constructively criticized by outside business perspectives.  Writing this business plan is helping me to designate the departments of the festival with the intention of allowing those areas to be managed by other people.

SF Hip Hop Dance Fest Recap

On Friday night I attended the 11th annual San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest, with my mom and dear hooper sister Shakti Sunfire.  The SF Hip Hop Dance Fest is a live theater show, split into two programs, showcasing hip hop dance companies, troupes, and crews from around the world.  I was blown away by Friday's program; the dancing was diverse, it was innovative, it was suprising.  I enjoyed watching a variety of dance styles be expressed before me, ranging from hip hop and breaks with the integration of contemporar

Training Schedule: Recovery Musts And Integrity

This is week two of my trial training schedule. I've basically "put myself in school", training physically and building my acting education. I'd say this is the first time that I have created such an intense schedule that is so diverse. I view myself as an athelete, and I love, in a very big way, feeling very fit and physically capable. I love being able to lift heavy bags of groceries easily. I love lifting heavy weights at the gym, and feeling pumped.

PARKOUR: Nothing Can Stop Me Now...

....well, at least that's the idea. Today I am attending my first Parkour class at The Athletic Playground in Oakland. I've known about Parkour for some time, but the stars are only now just aligning so that I may experience what the practice of this movement philosphy is about.
